Microsoft Quietly Making Millions on Misspellings

March 23rd, 2007 by Andreas from Xavier Media® in Advertising & Marketing. Topics: ,

I just read a something really terrible at DailyDomainer.com. Every time you type in an URL in the address bar in Internet Explorer and misspell the domain name you end up at a Microsoft web site filled with paid links. Sometimes the ads can even be links to your competitors :(

The worst part is that Microsoft is not alone to earn money on your misspelled links, Earthlink started a similar service in September and Verisign tried the same thing in 2003.

Will you be sure that you end up at the correct site when you type in an address in the future? What if the companies try to get personal information like bank details or credit card numbers from you at the same time when you end up at a misspelled domain?
