Domaining as Real Estate Investing

June 21st, 2008 by Sharon in Domain names. Topics:

Have you ever thought of buying and selling domain names on the internet? Do you know that some domainers have made millions of dollars from merely buying and selling domain names? If you do not, then you are in for a big surprise.

Domainer is referred to a person who is engaged in the business of buying, selling, developing, and monetizing Internet domain names. Their work is considered to be in the same spirit as real estate investing, from the conduct of buying, developing, and reselling. These domain names that domainers work with are generally not associated with services like web and e-mail, instead they are simply used for reselling purposes only. But there are also domain names that are developed into fully functioning websites, thus increasing the revenue from reselling them.

The business of buying and selling domain names has gotten enormous. It has turned into a whopping $2 billion dollar industry. And that number is estimated to double in just a couple of years as everyday there are about 90,000 domain names being purchased, and you would not believe how much some of those names are going for. Business.com was sold for $8 million dollars, while sex.com was purchased for a staggering 12 million. From those numbers, we can judge that the high value of domain names has gotten people to bid over them hysterically.

Statistics have shown that out of 32 million domain names that have been registered worldwide, 22 million of them have been snatched by Top-level domain .com. Second is .net with a portion of 5 million. A .com domain is really effective on building a great image for your business. The plan is to get the best domain name, powered by a professional website that will convince audiences to think your business is internationally recognized and well-established. Only then you start to build a name for your domain.

If you plan to enter the world of domaining with the intent of making fast money, you are left way behind to go with the flow. All the good names were already taken by internet pioneers who have learned their prospects. As a matter of fact, it is said that 97% of Webster’s words have been taken for this purpose. But it does not mean that hope is entirely lost. For instance: around this time of a decade, as people are demanding more rich-media content, web hostess that offer services mainly in the department of broadcasting have taken the advantage of top-level domain “.TV” to create new revenue flow for their businesses. And also, not until recently that web addresses can contain up to a maximum of 67 characters, as previously was limited to only 26.

To thrive in the business of domaining, you have to be really swift and creative at the same time. Owners of registered domain names are required to pay for them annually. Due to some who is not willing to sustain its activity, or simply can not afford to pay for them, the domain name will turn to be expired and become available again for sale at a normal price. Many obsessed domainers have set up a program that is capable of attaining expiring names, as soon as they become available. Are you mentally and physically prepared to compete with a sleepless computer-program that does not eat?
