How cool are .ME domains?
March 23rd, 2009 by Andreas from Xavier Media® in Advertising & Marketing, Domain names. Topics: Top Level DomainsBob Parson, founder of GoDaddy, recently changed his blog from a .com domain to a .me domain. At Bloggerier.com there's a discussion regarding how smart it is for Bob to move his blog to a .me domains and one of the comments are from Bloggeries :
Either way I'd agree they are cool domains. I bet a lot of people who bought bad domains years ago JUST go get a .com are regretting it. I don't think extensions matter anymore. You?
This could be an extremely smart move by Bob, since GoDaddy is affiliated with the .me registry and by using .me as TLD for his own blog he's giving some exposure to this kind of new TLD. I think this is a really smart move by GoDaddy, but what about everyone else. Is it smart move to use .me domains?
I think it could. The kind of TLDs will still be the .com domain for many many more years, but if you can find a catchy name like for example help.me you could build a successful site just based on the name. Content is of course the number one thing to be successful, but I will ignore that parameter in this blog post for now
By using .me domains you could create nice domain hacks, so .me could become extremely popular for advertising campaigns and other marketing stuff. You could also register domain hacks like extre.me. Unfortunately the best words may already have been taken by someone, but my guess is that many of the undeveloped domains will drop again in the next two years, so by keeping an eye open on the dropping names could give you a really nice domain.
Even if you can't find an already existing word as domain under the .me TLD you can still make up new words, and you can also of course register your .com domain as a .me too and use it for a community web site for your customers
.
The statistics from Xavier Media Whois shows that since the release of the .me TLD the number of pages hosted at .me domains has just increase to 3,190,000 pages today:

Great post, really makes one think about all kinds of great domain names with the dot me. Just after or while reading this post I jotted down a few to look up on godaddy.com to see if they are available. If for no other reason but to sell or flip domain names. I hadn't hear about Bob from Go Daddy changing to dot me, but I'm not going to criticize anything Bob does or doesn't do. I think he knows what he's doing without any of us telling him if he did the right thing. After all Go Daddy.com need I say more? Thanks for a great post and with some good information as usual Xavier. JJ P.S. Liked the stats from the graph.
