What's wrong with the .com?

April 22nd, 2009 by Andreas from Xavier Media® in Domain names, Statistics. Topics:

I noticed today that the .com lost a lot of pages recently. In just a few days the number of hosted pages on .com domains went from 43 billion pages to just over 29 billion pages. That's a 14 billion drop in number of hosted pages!!! In other words a 33% drop. I have never seen anything like that before for such a big TLD. Usually when this happens it's for one of the smaller like .va or .arpa, but not for like .net, .org and .com.

The drop in .com web pages

The otehr big TLDs drop a little bit too at about the same time, but not even close to the same amount of pages like for the .com TLD.

Anyone got any ideas what could be the cause?
