Web browser election in Europe
March 3rd, 2010 by Andreas from Xavier Media®In March everyone in Europe running Windows XP, Vista or 7 on their computers must select the standard web browser they would like to use. This is because of an agreement between Microsoft and EU, since EU thinks the IE domination is too big.
The users will be prompted to select one of the 12 leading web browsers including Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and of course IE.
Personally I think this is just a waste of time and may confuse people more than actually do anything good. Some people may think the prompt is some kind of virus since most people using Internet for Facebook, reading news and pay a bill or two a few times per month don't know what a web browser is. They just think IE is the same as Internet.
People who don't like IE will change browser anyway since it's so easy to change. You don't have to be asked to change web browser by Windows just to try something new. Just visit www.firefox.com, chrome.google.com or www.opera.com to try a new browser.
The good think with this update is that many of the IE6 out there may be replaced by at least a newer version of IE so we finally can stop developing for IE6
. Xavier Media is already prompting users with IE6 to upgrade to a new web browser as a part of the IE6nomore.com campaign we support, but this may help out alot.
People in web development will most likely already have several browsers installed, like me for example. I have Chrome, Firefox and IE installed on my computer and I also run Sun VirtualBox with Chromium just to try a new operating system
If possible I would really like to opt out from this update since I think it may destroy some of my settings or even try to remove one of my installed web browsers if I make a selection.
Did you select a new web browser in this update?
