There are all types of ways to increase your Twitter followers. It just takes a little time and effort to make it happen.

Here are four ways to trigger more engagement with your Twitter account:

1. Tweet Interesting Stuff

One of the best ways to get followers on your trail is through interesting posts. If you aren’t interesting or are posting the same old stuff every day, you’re not providing people with a good enough reason to follow you. Ask open ended questions, post an interesting article/study you found…basically anything that will spark a discussion. Once a discussion gets underway, you’ll have more interaction and hopefully this will trigger a domino effect in terms of followers.

2. Tell Your Friends to Tell Other Friends

Don't rely solely on your online followers to carry the torch for your Twitter account. Talk to those friends that you actually have a daily physical relationship with. Get them to tell their friends about you and ask them if they can share your content on their sites.  Make the most of your connections – this can lead to even bigger social networking opportunities in the future.

Ultimately, the people – and companies – who have the most followers are those that make their presence known. Lots of people assume that everyone knows they have a Twitter account – this is a huge mistake. Get the word out as much as possible through other social media networks, such as Facebook, Google+, Pinterest and your blog.

3. Post Lots of Pictures

If your Twitters posts are only comprised of text, then you’re missing out on a huge opportunity: photos. It doesn't matter how interesting your Twitter commentary is — people like to see pictures. People that post interesting photos in addition to high-quality text are more likely to get retweeted. It’s also good to provide different types of media to your followers – that way, your newsfeed becomes a lot more interesting (see #1).

There are all types of mobile apps that allow people to post cool photography. For example, Instagram is a popular app that a lot of people connect to their Twitter account. Take advantage of it. Link all of your pictures from these different social media platforms to make your Twitter account pop.

4.Tweet When It Counts

Frequent, fresh tweets are important but timing is just as important. Post things when people are up. You may be able to post a couple of things in the late night hours, but only a few people are up then. Most people will not bother to go back and read lots of tweets that were posted when they aren't online. Get their attention when it counts the most: during the daylight hours. As long as you follow these steps, you should see your Twitter followers increase in number.

Remember: Post interesting stuff, utilize your personal connections, upload cool photos and tweet when most people are. There are plenty of other ways to increase your Twitter followers, but these four tips should be a part of any social media strategy.
