Marketing using a nice price
November 2nd, 2008 by Andreas from Xavier MediaThe right marketing for your products are extremely important when you want to establish yourself on a market with a new product. In the domain name business it's even more important since the "products" (domain names) are really similar (just the ending may differ in some cases) and we have a good example of it: .BIZ vs .INFO
In 2001 both the .INFO and the .BIZ top level domains was created (I don't remember if both started accepting registrations at the same time), but the .INFO TLD got way more pages then the .BIZ domain. Why is that?
Already from the start .INFO got a low price approach on their marketing (at some time I think you could even get the .INFO domains for free). With a low price the first year they get many registrations (since most people only look at the first years domain price when they register) and therefore building up a big customer base. For the second year they usually charge "full price" (they need to earn money somehow
).
.BIZ had a slightly higher price (and still have
) and that has affected the growth of that TLD. As you can see in the graph from Xavier Media Whois the .INFO TLD is much much bigger then .BIZ:
As an example you can currently register a .INFO domain at eXavier.com for only $1.99 for the first year while a .BIZ domain costs $7.99 for the first year.
