.US versus .CA

November 12th, 2008 by Andreas from Xavier Media

In 1987, two years after the .US top level domain (TLD) was introduced, the .CA was released for registrations. Both TLD where restricted in the beginning, but the .US took a smart decision to open up the rules a little bit so that almost anyone can get a .US domain of their own. You still need some connection to US, but it's possible to get a domain name directly under .US instead of subdomains.

The .CA is still limited only to people and companies within Canada, which unfortuately is causing the .CA TLD to lose some hosted pages.

Since both the .US and .CA top level domains where released almost at the same time (at least before Internet was known by my Grandmother :D ) and .COM is the preferred TLD in both countries, you can compare the two pretty well. As you can see the .US is used to host much, much more pages then the .CA. This could be because of the rules limiting anyone to register .CA domains, but it could also be because of the differences in number of citizens in the two countries.

Over the last three months the .US TLD has increase slightly while the .CA has decreased. Isn't it time to upen up the .CA for public registrations?

Get your own .US and .CA domains at eXavier.com.
